![]() ![]() Written by another popular filmmaker, Sachin Kundalkar, and inspired by the years spent by Ravi Jadhav as a student at Sir J J Institute of Applied Art, the film is the journey of a woman who resorts to work as a nude model for an art school. Nude promises to be the director’s first attempt at arthouse cinema. Even when the subjects have varied from biopic to teen romcoms, the approach has always been commercial. Though his Hindi debut Banjo did not work well, all his Marathi films, from Natrang (2009) to Timepass 2 (2015) have performed extremely well at the box office. Jadhav is probably one of the most successful Marathi filmmakers in the new wave of Marathi cinema. The films releasing in 2018 have an interesting mix of first-time directors trying something new, as well as seasoned filmmakers with multiple films ready for the release.Īlthough held back from its festival release in 2017, Ravi Jadhav’s Nude (Chitraa) remains among the most interesting films this year. Fortunately, there are many films this year capable of pulling it off. ![]() Nevertheless, the industry has taken a blow, and needs to get its act together in 2018, simultaneously finding a proactive solution for the slump. ![]() There was an unfortunate case of Ravi Jadhav’s film Nude, which was not screened at Indian Panorama at IFFI and Kerala International Film Festival citing technicalities, in spite of being selected for both. With marginal exceptions of well marketed films such as Ti Sadhya Kay Karte and Chi va Chi Sau Ka produced by Zee Studios, audience response was weak, and the first independent hit Muramba released only in June, six months down the line.Ī few films like the National award-winning, Kasav (A psychological drama), Lapachhapi (a one of its kind foray into horror) and Faster Fene (rebooting of a literary hero), made their mark and were reasonably liked by the audience, but overall, the industry’s performance was disappointing. Films got delayed, and as a result, clashed with other films in the later part of the year with dire results. Fearing the worst, the distributors were not willing to take a chance. The final two months of 2016 were disastrous, but the effects persisted well into 2017. The Marathi film industry took a long time to recover from the effects of demonetisation. The most ancipated Marathi releases of 2018 include a good mix of films by debutant film makers and veterans ![]()
